Depending on what your looking to have done to your property, there are things you should consider before we give you a quote or certainly before we come an do the work. Here are a few things to consider:
It’s great to have a plan, especially if you’re doing landscaping or adding new features. Often just having it scratched on paper is good, but having a professional plan is even better. The more you can detail your expectations, the better.
Before doing any excavation, review and/or contact the City of Edmonton Permits or if you live in a surrounding town or municipality, check their local permit requirements. If you think you need a permit, you should get that done before the work starts. If you are unsure, give us a call and we might be able to provide you some guidance.
For any digging, hole drilling or even grading, we highly suggest you contact Alberta One-Call to ensure that you identify any buried utilities that could be damaged from the work undertaken.
Even though we are confident in the value of our work, you should always get more than one estimate. If it makes sense, get it broken down into hours and rate, any materials, and any supplemental costs.
When choosing a contractor remember that the lowest cost is not always the best option. The best way to get comfortable is to ask lots of questions such as what the work plan is, when would it start and end, experience with similar types of projects and any risks they might foresee. You don’t want to have questions after you have hired the contractor.
Insurance is important for both your protection and the contractor. Ask to see evidence of their operational insurance and also their WCB insurance.
Even when the project is underway, it is okay to ask questions. Just make sure that when you do have questions you signal to operator to turn off the equipment to it is safe to do so. No question is unacceptable if you are dealing with your property.
